Background

Ruben Foster is a certified probation/parole officer in the State of Alaska and has been employed in that position for 10 years as of 2009.   He presently serves as the District Supervisor (Probation/Parole Officer III) for the Kenai Adult Probation/Parole Office in Kenai, Alaska.  Mr. Foster was raised in a small rural area in Delta Junction, Alaska.  He began his career in the United States Army as an infantryman out of high school and was assigned to the “Honor Guard” in Washington D.C.   Following his service in the active component, he served approximately eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves and Alaska National Guard discharging honorably in 2003.

Ruben Foster has been instructing at the college level since 2002.  He has taught in both the traditional and online classroom settings. He has served or is serving at the following universities:

Matanuska-Susitna College, University of Alaska: 2002-2005 Adjunct Instructor, provided classroom instruction in Criminal Justice related courses.  Courses taught: Introduction to Justice- JUS 110 and Criminology- JUS 251.

Grand Canyon University, Arizona: Executive Fire Leadership (EFL) and Public Safety Administration (PSA) 2006-2009, provided instruction via Blackboard and A.N.G.E.L. primarily in the EFL graduate program.  Courses taught: Organizational Theory and Behavior-EFL 620; Community and Human Service Delivery- EFL 623; Public Sector Ethics- EFL 625; and Public Safety Seminar- PSA 329.

Northwestern State University, Louisiana NSULA: Criminal Justice Adjunct Instructor, provide criminal justice instruction via Blackboard.  2005 to present; Courses taught: Probation/Parole- SOC 4250; Introduction to Justice- JUS 1100; Corrections Process- CJ 2500.

In 2006, served as an instructor through a joint relationship with the Kenai Peninsula College and the local area high schools providing an introductory course in justice to high school students for college credit.  Used the polycom system to provide instruction to students in a village approximately 125 miles away across an Ocean Bay.

Kenai Peninsula College, University of Alaska: Have served primarily as an adjunct instructor of justice from 2007 forward, however from 2008-2009 academic year held faculty rank of Instructor of Justice and assisted in creating/writing a Corrections 30 credit Certificate and 15 credit Endorsement for the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) in partnership with the Alaska Department of Corrections. Courses taught: Introduction to Justice- JUS 110; Criminology- JUS 251; Business Law I- JUS 241; Principles of Corrections- JUS 210; and Juvenile Delinquency- JUS 203.

Mr. Foster has been with NSULA since fall 2005, providing online instruction through the Criminal Justice department specializing in probation and parole matters.  “Often times in law enforcement we see negatives on a daily basis.  It has always been my pleasure to provide instruction to those who are achieving for success.  They provide a level of positive interaction that makes me keep coming back for more!  Remember, approach determines response in many situations.  I look forward to seeing you in class!”

Ruben currently resides in Kenai, Alaska, with his wife Sarah and his two children, Joshua and Summer.  In the little time he has left, he enjoys fishing the world record king salmon in Kenai and picking blueberries in the fall.
